The Lewinsky Hill operation
On the night of the 29.12.47, units from Giv'at Hashlosha army camp and local patrolmen "purchased" weapons from the British army camp in Letwinsy Hill (Tel-Hashomer).
The arsenal was located in the south-west end of the camp and included 100 fire arms, 50 'Sten' machine guns, 5 'Fiat' cannons, Bren machine guns and ammunition. The Jewish forces were mainly interested in "Purchasing" the powerful anti-tank 'Fiat' cannons, in addition to studying the structure and components of the 'Fiat' shells.
The weapons were secured with an easily cut off thin chain, and only one guard on duty.
The weapons belonged to the company sleeping in the tents near the arsenal. The men used to spend their evenings either at the movies or in the canteen located 50 meters from the officers' mess and 200 meters from the hospital. Further information included a possible way for a vehicle to approach up to 50 meters from an existing gap in the fence surrounding the camp, and the time table and locations of the camps periphery patrols. Company commander, Yohanan Zariz disguised as a 'Noter' and Hagana member, Yuval Bubler, penetrated the camp, studied the guarding arrangements, and location of the arsenal. Zariz wasn’t impressed by the alertness of the guards.
