The Northern Front
The War of Independence was conducted on all of Israel's fronts. On the Northern Front, difficult battles were fought in defense of the settlements. Large attacks were conducted against Kaukaji's 'Salvation Army', who finally retreated from the Galilee and fled back to Lebanon. Part of Southern Lebanon up to the Litani river was conquered.
The War of Independence of the Jewish Yishuv in Mandatory Palestine, broke out on the morrow of the United Nations decision on the 29.11 1947, as a result of the opposition of the Arab population to the partition plan for two states, Jewish and Arab.
The war was conducted throughout the country. On the northern front heavy battles were fought in defense of the settlements (Bet Keshet, Mishmar Ha'emek, the battle of Zar'in, Ramot Naftali…….).
Heavy attacks were mounted against Kaukaji's 'Salvation Army', resulting in their being driven out of the entire Galilee, while part of Southern Lebanon, as far as the Litani river, was conquered.
The big campaign for liberating the Upper and Eastern Galilee and the conquest of Safed was named the 'Yiftah' campaign (25.4.1948 – 26.5.1948). The name 'Yiftah' is an acronym standing for Yigal Paikowitz Tel Chai.
