Martin Godwin was born in Berlin, Germany, on February 12, 1931, to his parents Sydney and Mellie. In June 1945 he immigrated to Israel.
Between 1945 and 1948 he attended an agricultural school in Pardes Hanna. In 1948 he ran away from school and in August 1948 he enlisted in the Palmach in the Harel Brigade, 5th Battalion, Company C. He was trained as a radio operator.
